Carol D’Amico is Adult Education and Purchasing Coordinator for SUN Area Technical Institute of New Berlin, PA. She oversees adult day and evening class schedules, coordinates customized industry training for local business and industry, manages purchasing of equipment and supplies for 19 programs, and works with both businesses and government agencies to coordinate training. Previously, she was a business teacher at Schuylkill Institute of Business and Technology in Pottsville, PA, where she taught students as well as trained teachers. She has also served as Technology Coordinator for Queen of Peace School in Coal Township, PA and Holy Spirit School in Mt. Carmel, PA, and has served on several area school boards. She has a B.S. Ed from Bloomsburg University and teacher certification at Instructional Level II in Accounting and Typewriting.
Paul Bachman is President and Business Manager for the Central Pennsylvania Building and Construction Trades Council, the Harrisburg-based arm of a statewide association of 15 international unions representing 115 local unions and 33 different building trades. He brings the substantial support of the trade unions for 14 counties to the KETEC job creation effort.
Meg Bartos of Mt. Carmel is President and Executive Director of Mount Carmel Downtown, Inc. With over 20 years of experience in the legal profession, she has courtroom, paralegal, research, and notary experience. She has worked at the Columbia County District Attorney’s office and several law firms including Duane, Morris (Philadelphia) and Weinberg & Green (Maryland). In Harrisburg, she worked with lawmakers handling corporate reorganization, formation and finance and real estate law. She has worked at the state and federal levels on both civil and criminal cases. She is an experienced grant writer, researcher and historic preservationist. Her college background in Regional and Urban Planning, including course work for Paralegal Certification from Penn State University, served her well in her post as CDBG program manager for the City of Hagerstown, Maryland. She is a member of The National Trust for Historic Preservation, National Main Street, PA Downtown Center, Greater Susquehanna Valley Downtown Affiliates, and the Brush Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Bartos has developed working relationships with staff at many other state and national historic preservation and revitalization organizations. She has volunteered her time and services to area communities by researching and writing grants, and preparing draft legal documents toward the formation of two non-profit organizations.
John Burfeindt, CFO, is part of the management team of Northeast BioEnergy, which plans to build an oilseed biodiesel plant at SEEDCO industrial park. He holds a BBA in Business Administration. He has over 40 years diverse experience in corporate management and finance, where he has been a Chief Operating Officer of a specialty furniture manufacturer, President of a paper folding box manufacturer, Senior Vice President and Partner of a window coverings manufacturer, and Vice President of Finance and CFO of several other businesses. In his role as CFO of NBE’s Renewable Energy Program, Mr. Burfeindt has direct responsibility for finance, manufacturing, banking relations, purchasing, subcontracting services, human resources, administration and product development. He is currently the owner of a regional high-quality candy manufacturer, specializing in chocolates and hard candy products. In addition, he is an entrepreneur and has purchased and sold several companies over the years. As an Angel Investor with the Susquehanna Investors Network, Mr. Burfeindt dedicated personal investment into NBE’s renewable energy program at an early stage, working closely with CEO Mike Coia during the development of financing and marketing efforts.
Tom Burkley is a public affairs professional and entrepreneur, with over 25 years experience working closely with private and public sector executives, educators, and community leaders to build programs and partnerships in education, workforce and economic development. Tom recently completed a term of service as International Marketing Executive for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Office of International Business Development (OIBD) where he specialized in attracting foreign direct investment to the commonwealth, most recently winning a Korean electric car company that will provide 400 new manufacturing jobs for the state.Prior to his position in international business, Tom served in the secretary’s office of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). While at DEP he initiated and managed a variety of new initiatives to speed the introduction of clean energy technologies to Pennsylvania (wind, solar, bio-fuels) and launched a new marketing campaign and website for Pennsylvania’s Brownfield Action Team (BAT) land recycling program.
Tom also worked extensively with the Governor’s Office and Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to promote foreign investment and trade in Pennsylvania, with a particular emphasis on attracting renewable energy companies and technologies. Tom was a key member of the Pennsylvania team that attracted Gamesa, the third largest integrated wind energy company in the world, to establish its North American headquarters and manufacturing operations in the commonwealth. He is also author of a new initiative for promoting renewable energy and sustainability along the Pennsylvania Turnpike corridor and other federal highways.
Tom holds a degree in history from the University of Michigan, and studied international relations and economics at The George Washington University and at Georgetown University through the Washington Graduate Consortium. Serving in Washington, D.C. for over twenty years as an education executive and entrepreneur in both public and private sectors, Tom is the founder of three successful companies focused principally on experiential leadership education–in government, business & finance, advertising and the media. Tom has also been a consultant on education to the oil and gas industry, as well as the banking and finance community having worked with well over a dozen countries in Asia, Europe and South America.
Richard E. Caruso, Ph.D., award-winning author of the 1992 book, Mentoring the Business Environment, founded Integra Life Sciences Corporation in 1989, and currently serves as its Chairman. Integra Life Sciences envisioned and then created a new branch of medicine known as Regenerative Medicine, where the body is enabled to re-create its own parts. Currently, Integra has annual sales approaching $600,000,000 with approximately 2,000 associates.
In 1978, Dr. Caruso founded The Provco Group, which organizes and provides funding for a variety of entrepreneurs and complex business activities. Currently, Provco manages $500,000,000 in assets and concentrates in the following areas: manufacturer’s lease programs, venture financing, real estate, alternative energy, leveraged buyouts, reorganizations, personal property, and investment strategies.
Dr. Caruso has served, or is serving, on the Boards of Susquehanna University, The Baum School of Art, the Business Performance Group of the London School of Economics, First Sterling Bank, Advanced Voting Solutions, Inc. and American Capital Mutual Funds, American Revolution Center and the Medici Archive Project. Dr. Caruso is also an advisor to Quaker BioVenture, a venture capital firm dedicated to investing in lifescience technology. He received a B.S. degree from Susquehanna University, M.S.B.A. degree from Bucknell University, and a Ph.D. degree from the London School of Economics, University of London.
Patrick Castellani is the founder and sole proprietor of Castellani & Associates. His senior executive experience includes having served as President & COO of Autumn Wave LLC, a manufacturer’s representative and distributor of DTV tuners, broadcast test equipment, and lithium ion polymer batteries.
Patrick is the co-founder of Advance Logic Inc. where he served as President & CEO. The company specialized in network integration and support and eventually launched the pioneering E-commerce site copperbox.com, an internationally known site specializing in the emerging markets of DTV and home theater. Advance Logic Inc provided the launch platform for many innovative products related to the professional and consumer DTV and home theater sectors.
Prior to his decade-plus of senior executive experience, Patrick served as Chief Instructor/Course Manager of ICS Learning Systems, where he managed the Electrical Engineering department and was an instructor of Electrical Engineering Technology and other related subject areas. Patrick earned his degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from The Pennsylvania State University. He also has extensive experience and background as a broadcast engineer, having served as Chief Engineer at WARM-AM/WMGS-FM, which was owned by Susquehanna Broadcasting Corporation, and as Director of Engineering/Business Manager of WKGB-FM.
Juli Corrigan As Director of the Educational Initiatives Division of Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) in Lewisburg, Juli oversees the development and implementation of multiple initiatives aimed at assisting individuals to achieve their educational goals. These include adult education, Central Susquehanna LPN Career Center, teen pregnancy, alternative education, nonpublic education, and others. It is her responsibility to oversee all grant writing activities of CSIU, and assure fiscal soundness of all grants and contracts for local, state, and federal reporting. She supervises multiple staff and contractors to make sure programs operate effectively, and serves as CSIU’s liaison with community groups to develop common goals and outcomes. Previously, she held many positions leading to Assistant Director and then Managing Director for the Center for Schools and Communities at Camp Hill. There Juli was responsible for project administration, management, and implementation for a statewide training, technical assistance, and service organization with an annual budget of over $10 million and staff of 75. Prior to that, she was a Foster Care Caseworker and Adoption Coordinator for Northumberland County Children and Youth. She holds a BA in Sociology and Religion from Bucknell University, and has done graduate work in Independent Studies at Bucknell. In 2002, she completed an Education Policy Fellowship at the Education Policy Leadership Center in Harrisburg.

Malcolm Furman is currently employed with Innovation Transfer Network (ITN) of Harrisburg, where he is the faculty liaison. ITN connects entrepreneurial faculty and students from a select group of colleges and universities in Central Pennsylvania with business owners to drive commercialization.He connects faculty directly to industry or to additional state and federal grant and assistance channels. As part of this work he is developing greater levels of collaboration within and among the schools in the consortium. Previously, he spent four years with the PA DEP Office of Energy and Technology Deployment conducting technical and economic evaluations of energy-generating, energy-saving, environmental, biological, and agricultural technologies; surveyed national and global publications for innovators and developers, and assessed their engineering, market, and financial potential for deployment in PA. He has reviewed and commented on pending legislation, numerous grant and assistance proposals, managed PA Energy Development Authority grants, and assisted the PA Department of Community and Economic Development Department of Agriculture in their review processes. His comprehensive understanding of technology, policy analysis, and management comes from almost 30 years in R&D, management, project development, and consulting. He continues his interest in the energy sector, especially in recent developments in gasification; coal-to-liquids; organic, thin film, silicon, and thermal solar systems; fuel cell development; and waste-to-energy. While working for the Commonwealth, he served as the PA delegate to the Appalachian Regional Commission Clean Coal Conference, the Energy from Waste and Biomass Conference, and the PA Dept. of Labor & Industry Energy Cluster Working Group, and as the DEP delegate to the Innovation Partnership. His activities in the ITN consortium extend these interests to include plant genomics, sensor technology, gaming and simulation projects, and advances in chemistry and biotechnology. He is currently a doctoral candidate at Penn State, holds an MBA with honors from Kutztown University, and has an undergraduate degree in Chemistry.
Robert F. Gergen, a Mt. Carmel native, is currently Senior Director of Strategy and Capital Planning for Wyeth Finance in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, which has recently been acquired by Pfizer. His principal responsibilities include coordination of capital policies, plans, and expenditures for Pfizer. The annual budget for the company’s worldwide project portfolio amounts to ~$1.2-1.5 billion. The most significant aspects of his role include long-term forecasting, metrics (or the development of financial ratios used to develop performance goals for improved capital efficiency), prioritization, and service on three committees. These are the Corporate Capital Project Review Committee, the Engineering Council, and the Capital Leaders Group. Rob’s degrees are a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Bucknell and an M.S. in Civil Engineering (Engineering and Construction Management) from Penn State. As a Principal Project Engineer for Wyeth, Rob managed commercial production projects around the U.S. and in Ireland. Before that, as a Project Engineer for Merck’s Somerset, New Jersey facility, he managed projects and programs in California and Pennsylvania. Before working for Merck, he was a Project Engineer for Jacobs Engineering Group. There he developed expansions or new projects for a wide variety of manufacturing facilities.
Mike Handerhan: A lifelong resident of Mount Carmel and graduate of Mount Carmel Area High School, Mike has a degree from Bloomsburg University in Computer and Information Science. Mike represents the Shamokin Creek Restoration Alliance (SCRA). One of the co-founders of SCRA in 1996, he has been a member of the Board of Directors since its inception and has served as Vice President, Treasurer, and currently serves as Secretary. He has helped with grant writing and reporting, planning, litter cleanups, land preservation, water testing, and other initiatives. His most noteworthy achievement is the preservation of the Lily Marsh wetland area in Mount Carmel Township and an adjacent railroad right-of-way.
Katherine Jaeger currently serves as KETEC’s Projects Coordinator, on special assignment from her employer, Central Susquehanna Opportunities, Inc. Katie began her career as Editor and then Managing Editor for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in New York City, the world’s fourth-largest technical publisher. There she oversaw a seven-editor department responsible for the content of all of ASME’s codes and standards. From 1992-2008, she worked as a freelance editor and writer, contributing articles to general-interest history magazines such as American Heritage, American Heritage of Invention and Technology, American History, and The World and I. She authored two numismatic books for Whitman Publishing of Atlanta, published in 2007 and 2008, and did freelance editing for Whitman. In 2008, she took the position of Fiscal Officer and then Grants Manager for the Northumberland County Planning Department. As Fiscal Officer, she managed $1.8 million in grant and general-fund income and expense for the Planning Office. As Grants Manager, she managed the County’s annual CDBG allocation, Act 137 Affordable Housing Fund, and a $1 million Bureau of Rail Freight siding construction grant. She submitted FY2010 House appropriations for12 projects (nine of which received earmarks) and $100M worth of County stimulus projects. She holds a B.A. from Allegheny College.
Tim Katona is an investor and marketing consultant who has been a successful team leader in managing businesses, products, global partners and customer relationships. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and has also studied at Wharton School of Business, Stanford University, and Golden Gate University. A 20-year veteran of California’s Silicon Valley with Sun Microsystems, Synoptics Communications, Adaptec, and Sperry Univac, he has managed budgets up to $350K and sales up to $700M. He has managed high-growth product lines in computer networking, storage, memory, graphics, and multi-user business systems, as well as relationships with software partners in customer relation management (CRM), data warehousing and e-commerce. In 1990, he co-founded Hewitt/Katona International, a marketing consultancy providing services to startup companies.
John E. Koury is a principal and vice president of The Quandel Group, Inc. a general contractor and construction management firm based on Harrisburg, PA. He holds a B.S. in Civil and Urban Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and has been in the Construction Business for 25 years. He joined the Quandel Group, Inc. in 1990, and is responsible for Quandel PA’s Agency Construction Management Operations. John has been involved in various projects totaling more than $1.3 billion dollars in construction value which include schools, churches, prisons, transit facilities, nursing homes, parking facilities, retail stores, and others. He is a Certified Construction Manager and a LEED Accredited Professional and serves on the Board of Directors of Quandel Enterprises, Inc.
Other affiliations include the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) where he serves on the Green Building Committee, Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), American Subcontractor Association (ASA) Study Group Member, and the Knights of Columbus Holy Name of Jesus Council. John is a native of the coal region, having grown up in Shenandoah PA. He currently resides in Harrisburg.
Peter J. Leibundgut, J.D. recently retired from the large law firm environment where, for 25 years, he was involved in both the public and commercial financial markets, generally representing lenders and issuers. Mr. Leibundgut’s practice was national in scope, representing primarily institutional commercial and real estate lenders in syndicated loans and complex structured financings. He is currently working with select strategic partners providing targeted consulting, fund-raising and lending services to real estate and commercial business clients. With extensive project experience in commercial finance, public finance, real estate, and general business arenas, he has represented a wide variety of lenders, borrowers, sellers, buyers, developers, and businesses, including Fortune 500 companies, retirement communities, municipalities, insurance companies, banks, military establishments and more. He is also experienced in mineral and mining rights, and Brownfield and Greenfield redevelopment. A graduate of Dickinson College with a law degree from Vermont Law School, Mr. Leibundgut is a Bar member in both New Jersey and New York, and was also admitted to U.S. District Courts in the Southern and Eastern New York districts.
Vanessa Leslie is an Officer in Northeast Pennsylvania for Wachovia Bank, a Wells Fargo company, and serves as store manager for the company’s Mt. Carmel office. She first joined the company in 2000, at predecessor bank First Union as a leader in the company’s Allentown call center. From 2003 to 2006, she served as a financial center manager in the company’s Hometown office. Previously, she worked for the Penn Public Interest Coalition, lobbying for tort reform, PUC reform, voter registration, and other issues. Vanessa has a B.S. in Marketing from Shippensburg University and earned her series 6 and 63 licenses in 2006. In addition to KETEC, Vanessa regularly volunteers for a variety of health-related fund raising efforts. She is currently a Notary, obtaining her Notary Commission in 2004 through the Commonwealth and Pennsylvania Association of Notaries.
Paolo Liebl von Schirach is an international economic development consultant who lives in Washington, D.C. He has more than 18 years of experience with development aid projects around the world, with a special focus on capacity building in investment promotion and international trade. He has consulted on projects in China, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Thailand, Belgium, Finland, Estonia, Czech Republic, Italy, Croatia, South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, Seychelles, Comoro, Madagascar, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Through his work on behalf of the European Union (EU) Commission, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the World Bank Group, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), he is well versed in evaluating many types of large development programs. He is currently a partner in the U.S. China Consulting Firm based in Beijing and Washington, and he recently served as an Economic and Trade Specialist for Avanz, in Pretoria, South Africa, where he assisted with the mid-term review of the EU’s South Africa Country Strategy.
In addition to his consultant work, Paolo is Editor and contributor to www.SchirachReport.com, an online publication providing commentary on international affairs, politics and economics. From 2003-2007, he served as Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, in their Master of Science Program. He is also a Fellow of the university’s Government Department. Tony Mazzatesta of Kulpmont holds a B.S. in Materials Engineering from Wilkes University and an M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. Tony set up mechanisms for contract procurement, project management, marketing/sales, and accounts receivable/accounts payable/bookkeeping. He coordinates the firm’s professional service providers (i.e. legal, accounting), SBA certification applications, and office renovations, and maintains quality control. He achieved or exceeded annual financial targets including cost of sales, overhead, revenue, and profit, accomplishing a revenue increase of 5x from year two to year three.
Previously, he served as a Project Engineer for Western International Gas and Cylinder, Inc., where he managed multimillion-dollar construction projects and oversaw design liaisons, permit procurement, financials, and execution of operations. His engineering tasks included nondestructive testing, production efficiency, operations management, safety procurement, and preventative/remedial solutions. As Vice President and Operations Manager for ESA Environmental Specialists, he managed personnel, contracts and capital resources for federally funded projects totaling $15 million annually, from Maine to Florida. Before that, as a Process Engineer for ESA, he worked in acid mine drainage remediation, and served as the Project Manager to establish the Reinhart Food Service distribution facility at SEEDCO.
Randy McKillop and his father, Fred have 50 years of combined experience in Governmental Relations and Consulting. Company founder Fred McKillop has worked Capitol Hill in Harrisburg for 36 years. He is a founding member of PAGR (Pennsylvania Association of Government Relations), of which Randy is also a member. The father-and-son team has grown from primarily consulting, to economic development, helping start-up companies, expansion of existing companies, and job creation. McKillop and Associates, Inc. have a strong presence and focus in environmental issues, renewable energy, and the recycling industry. Many of the current projects under way are companies moving into or expanding within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Strong working relationships, developed over 36 years, with the Governor’s Office and the Department Secretaries and their cabinets (Department of Agriculture, Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Community and Economic Development, and others) are just the start of the contacts and decision-making capabilities that Randy and Fred bring to the table. These relationships have and will continue to make us leaders in implementing the renewable energy package that the Honorable Edward G. Rendell has put into motion.
Mark Nastasi is President of IntelliWatt Renewable Energy, which plans to build a biomass-to-electricity plant at the SEEDCO industrial park. When that plant is operational, IntelliWatt will build a second plant to manufacture turbines for use in such plants, to be sold worldwide. Mark holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the State University of Rutgers, and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Management Information Systems, from Drexel University. A highly organized and results-oriented leader with a proven record of innovative management, successful problem solving, and exceeding goals and objectives, Nastasi has led the development of renewable energy projects in the United States with a special focus on biomass fuel sources. His professional experience includes establishing EnviroOne, an online environmental search engine and community portal, and CobbleStone Systems Corp., a start-up computer software and technology company. As President of IntelliWatt, Mr. Nastasi oversees all aspects of management and daily operations including strategy, direction, organization, project management, and financial activity. An active member of the Delaware Valley Green Builders Association, he is a resident of Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
Vincent O’Grady brings six years of experience in the solar energy and green building fields to the KETEC effort, including a PhD program at the University of Delaware and an undergraduate degree from Penn State. He is a project developer for EPV Solar out of Trenton, New Jersey. EPV Solar designs, develops, manufactures, and markets low-cost thin-film photovoltaic solar modules for the growing international renewable energy market. It has been at the forefront of research, development, and commercialization of thin-film PV technologies since 1991. Vincent would like to help companies moving into our area hedge against future electric utility rate increases by employing on-site, clean and renewable solar energy power plants that can reduce long-term energy costs. His mother was a Mount Carmel native and his relatives still live there.
Stacy Richards is program director of the SEDA–Council of Governments’ Energy Resource Center (ERC) in Lewisburg, PA. She manages a multifaceted technical assistance and education program to foster the development of an eleven-county region in central Pennsylvania as a leader in renewable and efficient energy technology and expertise. Educating existing manufacturing firms in the region about opportunities to participate in the wind, solar, and geothermal marketplace has been a primary focus of the ERC since early 2007. The ERC was established in early 2006 to help local governments, businesses, and residents reduce their energy costs; to help local manufacturing firms participate in the renewable energy technology marketplace; and to increase the region’s energy independence through the development of locally owned projects that use the region’s abundant renewable energy resources. Previously, Richards was Deputy Secretary for the PA Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Compliance Assistance. Before that, she was Director of the Environmental Business Network of the Pittsburgh Technology Council, and Director of Government Relations for the American Consulting Engineers Council. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from Bucknell University and an M.A. in Public Administration from Harvard University.
Robert Shirley is SEEDCO Project Manager for The PROVCO Group of Villanova, PA. He is KETEC’s liaison to the owners of SEEDCO, the 1000-acre industrial park that will become home to many of KETEC’s incubator graduates.
James “Doc” Taliaferro. During his years as Senior Accounting Clerk for the Washington Post, Doc was President of the Supervisory Committee of the Washington Post Employees Federal Credit Union. After the “Velvet Revolution,” he was hired by the Czechoslovak government as Western Business Advisor to the Czechoslovak News Agency. During his five years living in Prague, he was tasked by U.S. Ambassador Shirley Temple Black to organize and establish the American-Czechoslovak Chamber of Commerce. Doc was later designated as the Project Manager for the establishment of a Western medical clinic in downtown Prague.
When Oracle decided to move into new markets after the fall of the iron curtain, Doc opened offices, hired staff, and implemented operations in Bulgaria, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Russia, and the Ukraine. He negotiated the first VAR contract in Russia for AT&T Network Systems and established a Russian company to implement it.
Following a military background in security and law enforcement, the security consulting firm Traco Associates sent him to Singapore to open and manage a new office representing American and Israeli security firms. Doc is one of the original project staff that began The Hotline, the first 24-hour digital newspaper, and now a subsidiary of the National Journal. More recently, he helped Korean firm Autumn Wave, LLC to establish a high tech consumer electronics company in the U.S., complete with distribution, warehousing, and tech support facilities.
A project manager by trade, Doc has broad experience in establishing new companies in diverse commercial and cultural environments by utilizing many different business models. These same skills have allowed him to contribute at the local community level by serving on the Montgomery County, Maryland Police Advisory Board, as a Rotary Club President, and as leader of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
Alex Tallick is Business Agent for the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Shipbuilders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers Local 13 based in Newportville, PA and serving the Philadelphia area. He is a 30-year member of the union.
Gale Zalar is Community Action Director for Central Susquehanna Opportunities, Inc., a regional, private non-profit, community-based, charitable organization that is dedicated to helping people make positive changes in their lives and assisting their communities to grow. She is a Certified Workforce Development Professional who manages all community action programs and initiatives of CSO across three counties. These include CSBG Work-Ready programs, Food Stamp Outreach, YouthBuild, C.S.O. Cares, Family Savings Account, ORS, VITA Volunteer Program, Financial Literacy Program, and JUMPS. She also provides oversight to the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce on many local economic development initiatives. Prior to becoming CAA Director, Zalar was Regional Youth Director, Youth Program Supervisor, and Title I Supervisor for CSO.
